What is peroneal artery?

The peroneal artery is a branch of the posterior tibial artery. It runs along the lateral side of the leg and supplies blood to the muscles and skin in that area.

The peroneal artery also gives off branches that supply blood to the lateral compartment of the leg, which includes muscles such as the peroneus longus and peroneus brevis.

In cases of peripheral arterial disease or injury to the lower leg, the peroneal artery may be affected, leading to decreased blood flow to the affected area. This can result in symptoms such as pain, numbness, and muscle weakness.

Surgical procedures may be necessary to repair or bypass the peroneal artery in cases of severe blockages or injuries. Additionally, maintaining a healthy lifestyle, including regular exercise and a balanced diet, can help prevent issues with the peroneal artery and other blood vessels in the leg.
